By the time you're a few years into an SRE or support career, you're no longer just following runbooks — you're expected to own problems end to end. That's the shift this role marks: you'll work independently on incidents across critical business applications, build a reputation as the go-to person on your systems, and help less experienced teammates when they get stuck. Most days revolve around watching for anomalies, chasing down the reason behind a slow or failing service, and closing the loop with a clear explanation, not just a fix. You'll report into the support team lead and work alongside developers, infrastructure engineers and virtualization specialists whenever an issue crosses team boundaries. Within your first few months, you're expected to already know enough to run point on incidents without waiting for direction, while still looping in others on anything genuinely new. A good chunk of the job is turning what you learn from each incident into a best practice the next person can reuse. This role fits people who like being the calm, decisive voice when something breaks, and who don't mind context-switching between deep technical digging and stakeholder updates. It suits someone ready to move from following process to shaping it, but it isn't the right fit if you want to spend most of your time writing new product features. From here, the common next steps are a lead SRE role, an incident or problem management specialism, or a move into infrastructure or cloud engineering.

Responsibilities

Take ownership of assigned incidents from first alert to final resolution without needing constant supervision or hand-holding
Act as the subject matter expert for your application area, answering questions other team members can't resolve alone
Drive team discussions on tricky or recurring problems, pushing the group toward a workable long-term solution
Propose fixes for recurring operational issues instead of just patching the same problem every time it appears
Partner with infrastructure and virtualization teams to improve how reliably applications perform under real production load
Write clear, stakeholder-friendly summaries of what broke, why, and what was done to prevent it recurring
Help define and roll out better monitoring, alerting and incident-management practices across the wider support function

Who You Are

Bring at least 3 years of practical experience in site reliability engineering, application support or a closely related field
Have completed 15 years of full-time education, in line with this role's stated qualification requirement
Show strong working knowledge of monitoring and alerting frameworks, not just theoretical familiarity with the concepts
Be able to troubleshoot layered problems spanning both application code and the infrastructure underneath it
Have hands-on experience automating or scripting routine operational tasks to cut down repetitive manual work
Understand cloud infrastructure and common deployment models well enough to reason about where a failure originated
Be comfortable working with minimal supervision and taking a clear stance during high-pressure incident calls

Nice-To-Haves

Hands-on experience with server virtualization tools such as VMware or Hyper-V in a production setting
Exposure to writing or maintaining incident postmortems that other teams actually reference later
Some background mentoring junior support engineers or reviewing their troubleshooting approach
Familiarity with capacity planning or performance tuning for high-traffic enterprise applications
